Boxhagener Platz: Flea Market, Weekly Market & Opening Hours

Boxhagener Platz — locals just call it "Boxi" — is the heart of Simon-Dach-Kiez in Friedrichshain. Saturday farmers' market, Sunday flea market, plus a playground, chestnut trees, and cafés and bars all around. Our apartment at Seumestraße 8 is a 3-minute walk away — this guide covers when everything happens and what's worth knowing.

Boxhagener Platz farmers' market — opening hours

The farmers' market runs every Saturday from 9:00 to 15:30, year-round. Local vendors sell fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread, and seasonal produce. Relaxed and neighbourhood-focused — no tourist crowds, just locals doing their weekly shopping.

Best time for the freshest selection: right at opening, around 9am. If you're cooking in the apartment, this is the easiest place to pick up breakfast or lunch ingredients.

  • Saturday, 9:00–15:30

Sunday flea market (Trödelmarkt)

On Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00, a flea market (Trödelmarkt) takes over the square — antiques, second-hand goods, collectibles, and all kinds of curiosities. More relaxed than the Mauerpark market, with a genuine neighbourhood feel.

Well worth a browse if you're around on a Sunday morning — the best finds tend to go early, so arrive before 11am.

The square itself

A fountain sits at the centre of the square, surrounded by lawns, benches, and a popular playground with a sandpit and climbing frame. On warm days, Boxi fills up with people picnicking on blankets or sitting outside one of the surrounding cafés. The buildings around it are classic Gründerzeit Altbau — many, like our apartment, date from around 1900–1911.

What's around the square

Boxhagener Platz is bordered by Simon-Dach-Straße, Grünberger Straße, and Gärtnerstraße — all three dense with cafés and restaurants.

Breakfast cafés

Several breakfast cafés right on the square, usually open from 9am, often with a wait on weekends.

Evening bars

Bars line the square and Simon-Dach-Straße — from quiet wine bars to lively pubs.

Playground

Sandpit, climbing frame, and fountain — popular with families with young kids.

Bookshop & small shops

A handful of independent shops for books, second-hand fashion, and decor sit on the surrounding streets.

Getting to Boxhagener Platz

It's a 3-minute walk from our apartment at Seumestraße 8. By public transport: the nearest station is Frankfurter Tor (U5), about 8 minutes on foot, or Ostkreuz (S-Bahn/U-Bahn), about 12 minutes on foot.
