Our Altbau apartment at Seumestraße 8 sits in Friedrichshain, just a short walk away — on a quiet residential street rather than in the middle of the tourist crowds, with your own kitchen and self check-in.
What is the East Side Gallery?
The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving continuous stretch of the Berlin Wall and, at the same time, an open-air gallery. In 1990, shortly after the Wall fell, more than 100 artists from around the world painted the eastern side of the concrete along Mühlenstraße. The best-known mural is the "Fraternal Kiss" between Brezhnev and Honecker. Access is free and possible at any time, since it's a public outdoor gallery along the riverbank.
The gallery runs directly along the river between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaumbrücke, close to Warschauer Straße — in the same neighbourhood as our apartment. Staying nearby means you can visit the murals early morning or in the evening, when noticeably fewer people are around than during the day.
